Bog Born Crafts – Meet the Maker
We’re thrilled to be working with various small businesses. Find out more about Emma Harrison of Bog Born Crafts.
Working from her cosy cottage studio in Perthshire, Emma is an archaeologist-turned-potter who learned her craft from her dad.
Her beautiful handmade ceramics are inspired by Scotland’s ancient history, archaeology, folklore and landscapes.
Using both the potter’s wheel and traditional hand-building techniques, Emma creates everything from contemporary pieces to replicas of historic pottery – even Neolithic and Bronze Age beaker pots using traditional firing methods.
We’re delighted to stock Emma’s ‘Calanais Collection’ miniature replica ancient beaker pots in our gift shop. Inspired by pottery uncovered during archaeological excavations at Calanais, each one is decorated using bone and wooden tools, as well as seashells, to recreate the patterns found on the originals.
They’re lovely keepsakes of ancient Scotland – and just the right size for a wee dram!
You can see fragments of the original ancient pottery which inspired these pieces in the exhibition. More on this to come!

Inspired by Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery uncovered during archaeological excavations at Calanais, these carefully crafter beaker pots bring ancient craftsmanship back to life.
Inside our exhibition, you can also see the original pottery fragments that inspired them and recreation pots made by Graham Taylor from Potted History.
Dating back as far as 4,500 years, these remarkable finds were discovered in various locations around the Calanais stone circle and include pieces of Bell Beaker pottery, Grooved Ware, and other ancient vessels.
A huge thank you to Emma at Bog Born: Ceramics & Crafts who has also done a fantastic job recreating a series of pieces with such care and attention for our gift shop.
The complete pottery seen in the images below are not those available in our gift shop and handmade by Emma. A spotlight focus on the exhibition contributors will come very soon with more details on our work with Potted History!

The Calanais Collection
We were delighted to collaborate with Emma from Bog Born: Ceramics & Crafts to create an exclusive collection for the Visitor Centre.
Inspired by the landscapes surrounding Calanais, the range features beautifully handcrafted mugs in rich blues, greens and earthy browns, alongside miniature replicas of Neolithic and Bronze Age beaker pots discovered at the Calanais stone circle.
Each piece tells a story, celebrating the heritage and beauty of this remarkable place.
The collection has been incredibly popular and has been flying off the shelves – we’ve already placed another order with Emma!
If you’re visiting, be sure to pop into the Visitor Centre and take a look. You might just find the perfect piece to take a little bit of Calanais home with you.
