About the Redevelopment of the Calanais Visitor Centre

Wonk

The new Calanais Visitor Centre recognises the need to carefully conserve and care for the Calanais site, supporting sustainable tourism that protects its heritage while enhancing the visitor experience and the local community for years to come.

The £10.1 million redevelopment project was supported by a combination of major public funding bodies, including The UK and Scottish Governments, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and CnES.

The project was designed to create long-term economic, cultural, and educational benefits for the wider Outer Hebrides.

The previous visitor centre was replaced with a new, purpose-built facility. The project included:

  • Construction of a modern, energy-efficient building
  • Creation of a new and much-expanded exhibition
  • Improved accessibility throughout
  • Expanded café and retail space
  • A larger and better-managed car park
  • Enhanced facilities to provide an improved visitor experience

The redevelopment ensures that Calanais now has facilities that reflect its international significance and is designed to secure a sustainable future for the Calanais Stones and the community that surrounds and supports them.
