Calanais: Still in Motion

Wonk

Created by Jonathan Doyle and Freya Pellie in residency for Urras nan Tursachan.

Urras nan Tursachan (The Standing Stones Trust) is delighted to showcase the evocative work of the inaugural Calanais Residency artists, Freya Pellie and Jonathan Doyle.

The duo spent several weeks immersed in the landscape of the Isle of Lewis, aimed at exploring the special connection between the Calanais Stones and the major Lunar Standstill in June 2025.

By blending science with local stories, their work looks at how the stones have been a gathering place for thousands of years, bringing people together from all over the world for their own unique reasons.

Their unique backgrounds in aerial performance art and astrophysics provided a fresh perspective, allowing them to capture our ancient stones and historic landscape in an entirely new light.

This residency is run as part of the Calanais heritage programme, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The programme focuses on making heritage accessible, sparking curiosity, and encouraging people of all ages to explore the stories, landscapes, and archaeology that make the Hebrides so special.
